Editorial Review
After the stampeding success of Underbelly, another show about Melbourne's seedier side should get a decent reception - despite Rush technically falling into the saturated crime drama genre.
Rush's purported difference from the overexposed Law & Order-style hordes is that it doesn't involve solving crimes that have already happened, following the "dedicated detectives" as they piece together a mystery. Rather, viewers follow a tactical response unit as they scramble to prevent crimes before they happen. The difference is arguably incidental, but one thing the concept does offer is a faster pace and more genuine suspense.
This episode is the second in the series and it bodes well for the rest. Our heroes tear through the Melbourne streets in pursuit of a couple of teenage runaways. But it soon becomes clear these are more than just wayward teens and the pressure is on to prevent a tragedy.
Being recognisably Australian hasn't always worked in favour of home-grown drama. But, like Underbelly before it, familiarity works here, from the recognisable Melbourne landmarks to the fresh Aussie faces of the cast.
Rush airs on Network Ten on Tuesday, September 9, at 9:30pm.
