Editorial Review
Premiering in 1963, Doctor Who has captured the imagination of generations who've followed the adventures of an alien time lord known simply as "the Doctor" as he travels through time and space, saving planets and rescue civilisations.
In this instalment, the Doctor (David Tennant), flanked by his companions Martha (Freema Agyeman) and Donna (Catherine Tate), finds himself in the middle of a war between humans and fish-like humanoids known as "the Hath" on the planet Messaline. After he's taken captive by the humans, the Doctor has his hand forced into in a "progenation" machine which clones his DNA to create a soldier. The resulting anomaly, "Jenny" (Georgia Moffett), has two hearts - proving she's closer to being a true "daughter" than the Doctor initially believes.
In the meantime, after discovering the location of the temple which houses the mythical "breath of life" - which the war is being fought over - the Doctor must beat both sides to it and instil peace.
The plot amounts to little more than the Doctor and co. travelling through an underground city encountering humans and cheap-looking fish creatures that blow bubbles to communicate. There's no doubt that it's lame - yet it's ashamedly engrossing, largely due to the wonderful David Tennant.
This is the perfect episode for those wanting to jump on the Doctor Who bandwagon, as all the background information you'll need is explained through the Doctor's conversations with his new daughter Jenny.
Doctor Who airs on ABC1 on Sunday, August 10, at 7:30pm.

Elizabeth: David Tennant is a splendid actor and has brought countless thousands to an appreciation of not only the joys of travelling with the Doctor but - in his present incarnation as Hamlet at the RSC in Stratford - to the Bard himself. Not bad going for a 37 year old! (09 August 2008)
C*60: havent seen it!!!!!!!! (08 August 2008)
mitch1: To the reviewer, stay with the commercial channels and leave the intellectual viewing to those that comprehend good storyline, good "fish creatures" and good acting. Enjoy your cop, hospital, soap shows and leave the cream for those of us that enjoy quality variety. (07 August 2008)
