Burn Notice chronicles Michael Westen (Jefferey Donovan), an ex-US spy who was "burned" - blacklisted by the CIA - after being tagged as a dodgy agent. Stripped of his identity, he returned to his hometown of Miami and picks up odd jobs as a makeshift private investigator while tracing the whereabouts of his betrayer.
In this instalment, Michael takes a case in exchange for an elusive fake ID, allowing him to take on a created persona or in spy lingo, a "false flag". Michael becomes emotionally vested in the case, in which he's hired by a damsel in distress wanting to find her estranged husband who has disappeared with their son. After tracking him down, Michael finds himself up against somebody just as practiced and dangerous as he is.
Although loaded with sly and witty humour, Burn Notice ultimately fails to pull off the fresh, edgy drama it endeavours to create. But while the script falls short and the voice-overs have a tendency to state the obvious, the sexy and sharp cast pick up the pieces acting as the show's solitary drawcard.
Burn Notice returns to Network Ten on Monday, July 21, at 10pm.
