Editorial Review

Situated at the top end of Bourke Street, Water and Grass really is the perfect location for a business or non-business lunch, pre-theatre dinner, quick bite with friends, or an intimate meal for two. Officially open since January 2007, this former Croatian restaurant now specialises in chargrilled seafood and steak, with the mallee root chargrill fired up every morning ready to accommodate the most exacting diner. The relaxed dining room is enhanced by neutral tones with high-backed chairs resting on wooden floorboards at perfectly dressed tables. This is a fine dining environment, but with a refreshingly informal feel.

Head chef John Danzi has a passion for taking fresh, seasonal produce and creating exciting and innovative flavours. The two-course, pre-theatre menu is too easy a choice where for $27 you can choose from a broad selection of entrees, mains and desserts. Alternatively, from the a la carte menu, start with an entree of gently steamed mussels with white wine, parsley and cream, followed by a main of eye fillet medallions, grilled mushrooms, potato and red wine jus cooked on the mallee root grill. Finish with the baked peach with vanilla syrup, crushed Amaretti and mascarpone with a choice from the fair sized, reasonably priced, Australian friendly wine list.

Emily: This is a fantastic restaurant. The portions are HUGE and you will still savour every mouthfull! (07 May 2008)

Vanessa: I wouldnt say that the $27 pre theatre special has a broad selection to chose from, 2 of each course. However that really wasnt an issue as the brushetta and steak were delicious. Staff were great, service snappy (always good for pre theatre!) but not fast. A really great place, great atmosphere, delicious food, service etc. Will definitely return. (09 November 2007)
