Rockpool Bar & Grill

Editorial Review

Rockpool Bar & Grill, Melbourne, is the latest offering from Neil Perry and Trish Richards of world renowned fine dining restaurant Rockpool, Sydney. The driving philosophy for the build of Rockpool Bar & Grill was to create a great dining experience, a fusion of the Rockpool ethos and a classic North American steakhouse, with reference made to the grand brasseries of Paris such as La Coupole and Le Dome.

Editorial Review

Rockpool has been a stellar Sydney seafood restaurant for years, but when Neil Perry set up shop in Melbourne, the brand was in for a change. Melbourne's Rockpool is a bar and grill: the main feature is dry-aged beef. You can smell it as you enter - sweet, meaty and surprisingly appetising. The restaurant and bar are both rather clubby and comfortable, with lots of timber and brown tones and even occasional pictures of cattle.

The focus is on the quality of the produce, which Perry sources with great determination. The best food here is often the simplest: say, grilled king prawns or a plate of cured ham, followed by a steak with a simple salad and potato gratin. At these prices, you ask? You bet: this raises simple food to new levels. Or try the four raw tastes of the sea to start - exquisite Japanese-influenced mouthfuls. There's actually a wide choice that includes imaginative seafood dishes and delicious salad combinations, and even an occasional dish for vegetarians. Bar food is more limited in choice, but again, takes the familiar to new heights. Try the wagyu bolognaise with hand-made spaghetti, or the hamburger. The wine list is big and international, well chosen and fairly pricey.

Stephen: Great atmosphere, food (with some exceptions) and services. However, flame grilled Wagyu Marble 9+ is a disappointing way of preparing such delicate dish. (28 April 2008)

Richard: Fantastic food and excellent service. The grilled king prawns is a perfect starter - succulent and tasty. For mains, I had the 450g rib eye (it was cooked to perfection), while my wife had the ocean trout (extremely flavourful). The sides were to die for. The staff were friendly, attentive and professional. Will definitely be back. (12 February 2008)

Pia: Rockpool didn't disappoint. It was lovely to see a restaurant with so much attention to the quality of the produce they were using. Loved the focus on aged meat and ethical commentary on the treatment of seafood. Service was great. The steaks were divine. Would definately go again. (25 February 2007)

Danielle: What an absolute treat! Rockpool did not dissappoint. The food was great, service was exceptional and the experience on the whole was first class. (11 December 2006)
