Editorial Review

Located on the landing of the busy Southgate centre, Blue Train Cafe opens early, closes late and covers all the meal requirements in between. Spacious and unpretentiously funky, Blue Train also boasts a balcony area with unsurpassed views of the Yarra and Melbourne city. As would be expected for such a busy eatery wait times can occur, so relax in the lounge area taking in the art from aspiring artists which changes on a monthly basis.

Breakfast on a leg ham and Swiss cheese croissant, fresh fruit salad, or two eggs on toast with a selection of sides. For lunch try Blue Train’s signature burger with bacon, lettuce, cheese, onion and tomato, fries and chutney; or a hot-stone pizza with peppered chicken, crispy, roasted bacon and spring onion with mozzarella and Napoli sauce. For dinner sample the barbecue porterhouse with roast potatoes, wild rocket, beer battered onion rings and red wine jus; or the seafood nasi goreng with prawns, fish, calamari, bean shoots, egg, cucumber and spring onions. Finish with a selection of freshly baked cakes served with double cream. Choose from a concise, predominantly Australian selection of low-priced wines with all options available by the glass.

Jared: Was in there last week and couldn't help but feel that after 12 years, things could do with a spruce up. Compared to the last time I was there, food had lost its spark. (02 May 2008)

Brenton: I've been coming here for years, but it had been a while. Food is still great, can get a quick bite before heading to the Concert Hall or Theatres. Don't be like my girlfriend and miss the pizzas on the menu, the chicken one is great! (02 April 2008)

Janet: The food here is always sensational and there is always something a little different on the menu. They have great selections for vegetarians too! This restaurant does not take bookings. You just turn up and you will have a seat within 30mins (at most - at the busiest times) (30 October 2007)

David: Great place, its a really relaxed vibe and i have been there many many times. The food is good and well priced. There is a tv in the toilets so if i am heading out to dinner and the footy is on, its always the best place to go. (19 April 2007)
