Bistro Thierry looks as if it's the set of a French film, with its big bar, its tables set with white cloths and paper overlays, the bentwood chairs, the French posters and other memorabilia, the crowded tables and buzzy atmosphere. It's lots of fun, and more importantly, it's reliably good. The menu offers classic French bistro fare, done well, and has added a few modern ideas. All this is served by skilled waiters who can weave through the narrow spaces between tables and still smile. If you want steak-frites with bearnaise on the side, this is where you go. And it's also the place for great oysters, opened to order.
Regulars, of whom there are plenty, have firm views about onion soup and beef bourguignon: they want them on the menu all the time, no matter what the season. Don't ignore the beignets of crab (little fritters) with pink grapefruit salad, and pay attention to the specials. The wine list is full of French and Australian treats - try a Chablis or Pouilly Fume - and there's a good choice by the glass, including some very decent house wine. The $27 lunch special of two courses and a glass of wine is excellent value; but if you're coming for dinner then don't forget to book, because you're unlikely to get a table if you don't.

ijah: Wow! Bistro Thierry is a REAL FRENCH EXPERIENCE! From the menu, to the dining room layout & decor to the accents & expertise of the waiters and (of course) the wine list! Had a confit duck with a rich and delicious Orange sauce (very generous portion of duck) and tender Beef Bourguignon. Dessert was excellent - a baked raspberry souffle (which the waiter cut and poured over a raspberry sauce at the table) which came with a delicious raspberry sorbet. Definately a great destination for a special occasion. Everything about the food and atmosphere was extremely enjoyable! (17 March 2008)
Mr C: There are places that one goes to enjoy a "special" dining experience. Ours is Bistro Thierry. The restaraunt is authentically French, as if being transported straight to avenue des Champs Elyses. Make sure you observe the uniquely french clientele, adding to the illusion. The wine range is impressive and the food thoughtfully diverse...and you can experience a semi-set 2 course meal with wine for a proletariat sum of $27. (09 May 2007)
Marina: Authentic Parisian decor, friendly French speaking waiters, and an odd table of French patrons. Roasted Lamb cutlets were delicious, and the creme brulee did not disappoint! We had an enjoyable time, highly recommend. (15 January 2007)
