Pellegrini's Espresso Bar

A Melbourne institution, this classic Italian espresso bar has been feeding the masses for decades.

Editorial Review

Although I’m not a Melbourne local, I have lived here some seven years now so I am filled with shame to admit that until last week I had never been to Pellegrini’s. Having said that, I’ve managed two visits in the past week so surely that makes up for something. This Melbourne institution has been feeding the masses for decades now; people flock to this classic Italian espresso bar for honest home-style cooking. Set in a long narrow space, the prime positions are at the bar with extra stool seating flanked by gold-backed mirrors and a large communal table in the kitchen also available.

There are no menus here, just a large hanging board that proclaims the day’s offerings. If there’s something you fancy that isn’t listed they can generally accommodate, though be prepared to receive a raised eyebrow if your wants are a little untraditional. Choose from the likes of minestrone du jour, spaghetti marinara, pizza napoletana, risotto primavera, ravioli Genovese, and cannelloni alla nicoise. If the side of bread that accompanies your meal isn’t enough, a daily salad is also available. Try to leave room for one of the Italian pastries on offer and possibly the strongest espresso Melbourne has to offer. This is an alcohol-free zone but trust me, you won’t miss it.

Being an institution does not a good restaurant make and unfortunately the Pelligrini's Espresso bar is over-rated and over-priced. I've tried most plates on the menu and the food is fatty and bland. It's fasta pasta under the guise of a trattoria.

This is more than great traditional pasta, it is an amazing Melbourne tradition. Get in early to take a seat at the large table in the kitchen. There is great pasta and strong coffee on offer, but the conversation is the best part. Last time I was there I sat next to a couple of men who had first started meeting there during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Enjoy your visit and just for a moment reflect on all the people that have been there before you over many years.

This place is somewhere every tourist and local should experience at least once in their life time. It has a great atmosphere, the food is simple yet delicious (presentation isn't fantastic however), the menu is displayed on a wooden board above the bar, and its been that way forever. I'd highly recommend tasting the gelato and the coffee.

I expereinced Pelligrini's for the first time on Saturday. Yes it was very crowded, decor is definitely dated but the food was beautiful the service swift and the boss very entertaining!

i go to melbourne every couple of years or so . pelligrini's is the first and last place i visit and as often as i can manage in between . their apple strudel is to die for, the pasta par excellance and the coffee is equal to la dolce vita in milton , brisbane . i've tried about 20 other places in melbourne for coffee ( i'm a long black fanatic ) and none can equal it twice in a row . it is the best in melbourne .
