Circus
Editorial
The rouge interior with sheer curtains, plush leather banquettes and chunky chandeliers shouldn't put you off dressing up for a night out here, although the crowd is much more casually attired than other local clubs in the area, giving a more relaxed vibe to the place. Arrive early in the night for the best cocktail experience, as getting there when the club is full will mean a wait that will have you wishing you'd ordered a wine instead.
The rooftop bar upstairs provides an ideal opportunity to run out for some fresh air or have an intimate chat (well, as intimate as you can in a club with a 300-person capacity), and it also gives you a chance to check out the regular Chapel Street parade from on high.
Best to make the most of Circus before the Commercial Road area fills up with apartments - that highly sought-after 24-hour licence may not last long in a high-density residential area. Overall, Circus has captured the right blend of easy clubbing in a lush and well-run venue with a touch of Melbourne's typical understated style.
