Regent Theatre
Editorial
Today, a 2000 seat lyric theatre is home to premier musicals. She has seen Fiddler on the Roof, Sunset Boulevard and Annie. She was, in 2008, the first stop for teen witch blockbuster Wicked.
The Moorish-themed extravagance of this performance space does nothing but remind you: you are at the theatre. The suspension of belief requisite to enjoy great musical comedy begins at the door. This fanciful, wonderfully inaccurate rendering of Spain with its Italianate façade makes seriousness and sourness impossible.
Access for the mobility-impaired here is good with a concierge on hand to take you, if needed, to one of eight wheelchair spots in the stalls. For the hearing-impaired, a 'Word of Mouth' audio system is in place.
A glorious, garish and grand venue for entertainment, the Regent has outlasted fire, the threat of demolition and, at a particularly dark point in the eighties, the threat of poker machines. These days, she chimes only with the promise of hig-quality, large-scale performance.
