Pellegrini's espresso bar

There are certain venues you suspect would survive a cataclysmic, earth-shattering disaster of worldwide proportions. If Melbourne were to take a direct hit form an asteroid, levelling to post-apocalyptic wasteland, I have a feeling Pellegrini's would still be standing. As far as institutions go, it's as old as the hills and much-loved by its devoted following. Cheap, hearty and above all genuine home-cooked Italian fare with an enviable perch on the posh end of Bourke and yet a lived-in, diner ambience. It's the perfect way to end a weary shopping day.

Being an institution does not a good restaurant make and unfortunately the Pelligrini's Espresso bar is over-rated and over-priced. I've tried most plates on the menu and the food is fatty and bland. It's fasta pasta under the guise of a trattoria.

This is more than great traditional pasta, it is an amazing Melbourne tradition. Get in early to take a seat at the large table in the kitchen. There is great pasta and strong coffee on offer, but the conversation is the best part. Last time I was there I sat next to a couple of men who had first started meeting there during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Enjoy your visit and just for a moment reflect on all the people that have been there before you over many years.

This place is somewhere every tourist and local should experience at least once in their life time. It has a great atmosphere, the food is simple yet delicious (presentation isn't fantastic however), the menu is displayed on a wooden board above the bar, and its been that way forever. I'd highly recommend tasting the gelato and the coffee.

I expereinced Pelligrini's for the first time on Saturday. Yes it was very crowded, decor is definitely dated but the food was beautiful the service swift and the boss very entertaining!

i go to melbourne every couple of years or so . pelligrini's is the first and last place i visit and as often as i can manage in between . their apple strudel is to die for, the pasta par excellance and the coffee is equal to la dolce vita in milton , brisbane . i've tried about 20 other places in melbourne for coffee ( i'm a long black fanatic ) and none can equal it twice in a row . it is the best in melbourne .

Downcast eyelids these men don't really want to be there. They are there out of tradition and money not because they love working there. The female workers are more butchy than the male workers. It's all for show. Next time your there take a closer look these workers are brewing underneath. Wake people.
