Editorial Review
Mark Kozelek may be best known for his work with Red House Painters - the band he fronted throughout the ‘90s - but he's since branched out with a successful solo career and a new group. Forgoing the ‘slowcore' sound of his earlier work, his new material has far more in common with the alternative folk scene.
We say alternative because a large portion of Kozelek's work tends to be acoustic AC/DC covers. Or just covers in general. That's kinda how he got his start as a solo artist. Following the demise of Red House Painters in 1998, Kozelek went into the studio to record a solo EP, Rock n Roll Singer. Alongside the original songs were a couple of AC/DC covers with a radical rearrangement. These reworked versions went down so well that Kozelek returned with a full length album of AC/DC covers the following year - What's Next to the Moon. Of course this wasn't the first time he'd dabbled with cover versions. As part of Red House Painters he had reworked songs from Simon and Garfunkel and The Cars.
Cover songs would continue to play a part in his next project, the band Sun Kill Moon. Formed around the turn of the century, the band has released three albums to date - one of them being comprised entirely of Modest Mouse covers. We're pretty sure you'll be able to hear some of those famed covers when Kozelek takes to the stage with his acoustic guitar.
