Van She: Ze Vemixes

Van She throw on some French house pants and carve up their debut release.

Editorial Review

Release date: 13 June 2009 (Modular)
Really, you could just dial up some Daft Punk on your iPod and gain a more satisfying experience than Van She's Ze Vemixes re-release of their debut LP, V. As groundbreaking as that LP was, this re-hash seems a little pointless and hardly relevant. With acts like Justice pushing French house into newer, harder directions, what Van She present here is a sound made popular around the turn of the century. Just like fellow Australian, The Galvatrons, they're reaching back in time for their music formula, but are merely making carbon copies.

The double-CD set - the first disc being the debut LP - has been released to coincide with the groups Australian tour, obviously in an attempt to raise awareness of the live potential they hold (remember, they were known as Van She Tech until recently). Labelled a collection of 'dancefloor-oriented' remixes, the definition of the words is taken here as repetitive, symptomatic and more than a little cliche. But this is exactly what the club-going public want: a reliable soundtrack to score their journey into the darkened bowels of the next club, party, morning after drive home. In that respect, Van She certainly deliver.

If you're after an introduction to the group before lashing out on a ticket to their live show, this is the ideal purchase. But if you're a fan of new music wanting to experience the best Australian music has to offer, well, nothing to see/hear.
