Spiritualized
Editorial Review
The songs on Spiritualized's latest album weren't actually written by frontman Jason Pierce. Well, not in the traditional way. He attributes the material to a 1929 Gibson guitar he found in a Cincinnati shop. "It almost seemed like it [the guitar] came with the songs attached", is Pierce's exact quote. In any case, he wrote the bulk of the new album, Songs In A&E, in just two weeks and change. That's when he fell ill with pneumonia and the whole project was put on hold. It would take a full two years before we would recover and continue the sessions.
According to Pierce, "It was very hard to reattach myself to the record. It took a long time, to try and rediscover what my original thought processes were. But it would've been equally hard to just let the songs go, because they're invested with a huge amount of emotion."
The good news is that the album was completed and has been met with critical acclaim, both in the UK and abroad. Spiritualized's first full-length release since 2003, Songs In A&E is a welcome return for one of UK rock's true survivors.
