Editorial Review

According to music industry folklore, you're only ever one single away from conquering the world. For Sydney's Youth Group, that one single was a cover of Forever Young. While the band had managed to attract the attention of the Epitaph record label in the US and had a solid local following, it was Forever Young that took their career into another league entirely. Featured on television show The O.C, the track immediately struck a chord with the public and went on to top the Australian charts, hanging around the number one slot for most of the summer. Youth Group had arrived.

Although they looked like an overnight sensation, the reality was quite different. The band first came together in the late ‘90s and, following a number of turbulent years, settled on a final line-up in 2004. Fact is, they already had two albums in the can by the time Forever Young came about in 2006 and a third on the way.

Having enjoyed an extended hiatus, the band has now returned with a proper follow up, The Night is Ours,/i>. Although the album debuted outside the Top 50, Youth Group have always been a band on slow burn; the kind that slowly works its way into your subconscious. Just look at Forever Young, that song took nearly six months to hit the top of the charts.

With a huge national tour currently underway and a new single ready for release, Youth Group are just getting started. Don't be surprised if you see the album edge its way up the charts over the coming months.
