The Visible Concert showcases the music and mentoring side of Melbourne's Emerge Festival. It's a chance for both established and upcoming musicians from refugee backgrounds to perform in front of the wider community.
This year's concert line-up features a cross-section of acts, encompassing a number of different genres. On one end of the spectrum you have Melbourne's Diafrix. The hip hop group has been around for the past five years and has won a strong following with their live shows and funk-drenched production. Eschewing sampling in favour of original music, they meld soul, funk and reggae while up on stage. So far they've released one EP and fans are understandably looking forward to their highly anticipated LP.
Grrilla Step are another highlight. One of DJ Dexter's many side projects, the band blends Polynesian influences with R&B, hip hop, reggae, house, gospel and krumping, plus everything else in between. Their live shows are certainly worth catching - between Dexter on the turntables and the krumping action up front, it's an energy packed performance that transcends music and cultural boundaries.
Rounding out the line-up is a host of local, emerging acts. They might not have the same level of exposure, but the enthusiasm alone should help make this a very entertaining day out.
