Editorial Review
With the release of 1986's Not of this Earth and the subsequent Surfing With the Alien, Joe Satriani helped popularise instrumental rock music. A long dormant sub-genre, it sprang back into public consciousness thanks to Satriani's exceptional compositions and technique. Coming from a music-teaching background, Satriani had plenty of time to hone those skills and pass them down to a new generation of musicians. Some of his former pupils include Kirk Hammett (Metallica), David Bryson (Counting Crows) and Kevin Cadagan (Third Eye Blind).
Of all his former students, Steve Vai would prove to be the most significant. Finding fame as David Lee Roth's guitarist, Vai raved about Satriani in numerous interviews and that ultimately helped the music teacher ink a record deal and release his groundbreaking debut. 20 years and change since that release, Joe Satriani remains one of the world's most gifted and in-demand guitarists. He's released too many albums for us to list, appeared on countless records and toured with people the likes of Mick Jagger. Oh, and he has his own guitar and everything. Frankly, you'd be hard pressed to find a better guitarist anywhere out there.
