Todd Watson & Jason Singh: The World As You Know It (single)
Editorial
You couldn't accuse these guys of lacking ambition. "Are you ready? Cos we're gonna change the world as you know it/Hold it steady/We'll light a fuse and raise the roof as we blow it." What isn't clear is how three minutes and 18 seconds of shoplifted 1980's electro-pop is going to bring about significant change on a global level. Mind you, vocalist, Jason Singh, knows all about getting things done in quick time - his band, Taxiride, had fame and a successful music career for about six minutes in the late '90s, proving that Warhol's original estimate of 15 was wildly optimistic.
The World As You Know It is Singh's collaboration with club DJ, Todd Watson. Apparently they couldn't find a satisfactory name under which to release it, and went with their own. Watson employs every technique that will deliver a disposable dancefloor hit: basic bass, a deep sugar-sweet synth line, periodical whooshing attempts at crescendos, and Singh's popcorn vocals, heavily laced with reverb. While nothing special, the tune is ok, apart from one instance of laughably poor simulated DJ scratching. But Singh's attempts at self-aggrandising fast-rhyming lyricism honestly make Vanilla Ice look good - and bear in mind that Mr. Ice recently issued a public apology for his music career.
Basically, if you're going to talk yourself up, you have to be able to back it up. And if you spend all your time talking about doing something, then you never get anything done. Watson's efforts are enough to listen to, but the over-inflated lyrics mean this song only ends up making a mockery of itself.

This is the first time i have ever commented on a review in my whole career, but i couldn't resist! Mr Lemon probably hasn't walked into a club since he was wearing flares! For your information ... Taxiride had 8 top 40 singles, were 5 times platinum, and are the only Australian band ever to have 2 number 1 radio tracks. one in 2000 and one in 2002! ... nothing in the '90s. What have you done? If you would like to meet up for a musical lesson, feel free to give me a buzz. If not, enjoy your time in you study thinking about why you weren't good enough to make it as a musician!
