Editorial Review
A swanky addition to Melbourne's fastest growing entertainment hub (Port Melbourne), Sloaney Pony is a nice little slice of urban chic, with just a touch of 'how's your father?' Reclining in a chair outside, or sinking into one of the many comfy sofas inside, you don't have to stretch your imagine to work out why Melbourne's hip, young things pop in so regularly for a cosmo and some roasted duck shanks. With live music on Sundays and DJs over the weekend, this bar and restaurant is fast becoming a Port Melbourne institution.
The Pony, as it's known to regulars, is definitely a wild ride for drinkers. Attention is paid to providing boutique beers which are actually boutique - like the Erdinger Weussbrau (on tap), Moo Brew Hefeweizen (from Tasmania) and the Duvel Abby Ale. There's also a list of tried and tested (Budweiser, Heineken, Coopers, Mountain Goat etc) if you prefer to keep your adventurous moments for home. The wine list is likewise a dedicated affair, with more varieties of French champagne than Fergie (the singer) could deal with. Australian favourites rub shoulders with European delights, creating a very complex and thorough list.
If, however, you are one to kick up (or carry) your heels at the end of a long day, the cocktail list will satisfy. Featuring variations of classics and a few house recipes, the list moves from old and spicy (blood orange and cinnamon sidecar) to summery (Zen peach iced tea), with a few obscure mixes to jazz things up. Try the Vanilla margarita (infused tequila and vanilla) for a twist on the classic drink.
