Editorial Review
Like many good things in our mighty, cosmopolitan city, Sweatshop bar is a fusion of cultures and ideals. Bearing more a resemblance to an Asian tailor's, this small yet substance-filled bar has set palates and wallets afire with a simple blend of subtle flavours and quality ingredients. Adorned with reams of silk and satin - and a truckload of cheongsam hanging from the rafters - the low lighting conspires with the drink and tapas menus to spirit you into a world where taste is the Emperor of all things.
The drinks list is a healthy mix of traditional favourites plus a host of house concoctions. While it may be un-PC to utter these words at work (under the heavy glance of a sexual harassment policy), asking for a Love You Long Thyme or Ping Pong cocktail will swiftly have you in the swing of things. Cocktail specials are also changed on a regular basis - just check the black board when you arrive. For those wanting a simple mixed drink - G&T, Scotch and cola etc - Sweatshop use high-quality spirits as first pours, so you won't feel guilty ordering more than a couple.
The CBD location means Sweatshop is home to many suits and skirts at the end of a long day (from one sweatshop to another
), but don't let this deter you. The seating options mean you can snuggle up with your date at a table or in one of the back booths, far from the madding crowd. And with the popular Seamstress restaurant located on the floor below, Asian-fusion cuisine is a mere beckon away. Just be sure you strike the staff on a good night. Bad timing will mean a few surly gazes shoot your way.

Mike: Sweatshop is in the basement. You have just reviewed the upstairs cocktail and restaurant bar. (16 July 2008)
