Hairy Canary

Editorial Review

More canary than hairy, this bar does great cocktails and even better tapas.

Editorial Review

Right in the heart of the city, there's a busy, little tapas bar by the name of Hairy Canary. Sure, the first impression one gets upon walking up the short flight of stairs may be closer to that of a hip, urban cocktail bar - what with the amount of suits present on any given evening. But the charm really sets in once your seated and awaiting your first round of cocktails.

With an emphasis on Spanish cuisine and traditional alcohol (don't worry, you won't get many ex-backpackers longing for a taste of their youth), Hairies has a large range of tapas and fusion meals based upon traditional recipes. There's even real Pisco liquor behind the bar, so those Pisco sours will actually be made authentically. That makes a change from bars who make ?authentic' cocktails with what ever substitute alcohol they can get their hands on.

And don't forget this bar during festival time. Hordes make their way here for a quick coffee or meal before heading off to their next show. Plus, it also makes a great book-end to any evening, making use of their late license to serve Spanish beers and shots into the wee hours.

Jacqui: The Hairy Canary has great atmosphere, very friendly and cosy. The food and service was fantastic and all for a reasonable price. (18 December 2008)
