Editorial Review

The city version of Pugg Mahones, even though it's tucked away and housed in what was - in a previous incarnation - an old wool store in one of Melbourne's most famous laneways, undisputedly remains one of Melbourne's hotspots. With both locals and tourists/backpackers loving the usually buzzing atmosphere of Puggs, you're quick to forgive the usual selection of ‘traditional' Irish fittings and dubious decorations. Indeed, its name might literally mean ‘Kiss My Arse' in Gaelic, and such an irreverent sentiment is embodied in its frivolous and fun-packed drinking environment.

Their backpacker Monday nights are traditionally chockers, and it's a great way to spend an evening, holed up in one of their hidden booths either up or downstairs as the party swirls around you. Where would you be without their 13 international and local tap beers though? Left somewhere, nursing something boring, that's where.

The way Pugg Mahones works is a fine example of how to combine the traditional flavours of an Irish pub with a buzzing nightspot without sacrificing any of its cross generational appeal. In terms of food, Puggs also caters for lunch and dinner from Monday through Friday, and there's live entertainment each night in the upstairs bar. It's an enticing proposition any night of the week, if you can get past the myriad rugby and general sporting wall adornments, you can easily settle in for a big night of not much at all, or get your dancing pants on. Plus, because it's a strange building architecturally, you'll be able to freak yourself out continuously by getting lost in its labyrinthine contours.

dave allen: Inform your legal representatives before attending this venue . If it's famously thuggish bouncers don't get you , the careless attitude of the management to safety will, "may they die roaring". (16 March 2008)
