Editorial Review
In 2003 Urgent was a novel written by four Geelong youngsters, whose combined voices tell the stories of three young women who discover they are sisters. In 2008, through collaboration with the Courthouse Youth Arts Centre and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, Urgent has grown into a piece of inspiring and thought-provoking theatre.
The characters' predicament of separation is a consequence of the Stolen Generation and their stories give a personal account of its lasting impact. As the reunited sisters endeavour to reconnect with the family and culture they were deprived of, they uncover some truths about the things that really matter.
Urgent prompts viewers to delve deep and ponder their own thoughts on reconciliation and the Stolen Generation by providing another perspective from which to view these pressing issues.
The theatrical version of Urgent is directed by the novel's co-author, Julia Torpey, and was produced through a series of artistic workshops with young Aboriginal people. The play is intended to represent the voices of the youth, initiate discussion and celebrate Indigenous youth culture while entertaining audiences with music, dance, puppets and digital imagery.
