Around 86,000 cricket fans flocked to the MCG last summer to see the game at its most electrifying. This summer is shaping up to be another fast and furious spectacle of exciting and exhilarating cricket. On 11 January 2009 the first of three Twenty 20 Internationals will be played at the MCG with the Aussies taking on South Africa. The Gabba is the next battle ground for these two teams on 13 January. Australia then takes on arch rivals New Zealand on the 15 February at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the final match.
Every 2 years, the International Cricket Council world Twenty20 is one of the international Cups that cricket playing countries fight for most fervently. The tournament consists of 12 teams and is contested by all Test playing nations plus qualifiers. Sri Lanka, India, West Indies, England, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Scotland are also in the mix.
Purists may bemoan that it’s just not cricket. However for a spectator, cricket has never been more action packed! A Twenty20 game involves two teams. Each has a single innings, batting for a maximum of 20 overs. So it’s all about smashing 6’s and 4’s and taking risks. There’s no time to watch grass grow, paint dry or chat about the seagulls! A normal cricket test match may drag on for days, one day international matches the entire day, but in T20 matches, the winner is determined in a few hours. And there is no chance the game will end in a draw. Enter, sudden death mode.
Head to the alcohol free Milo Family zone with the kids or head out with your mates for a beer. But whatever you, do don’t blink or you’ll miss it!
