All Aboard...for School Holiday Fun!
Editorial ReviewEditorial Review
Train rides and school holidays go together like ham and cheese. Discover a place where the steam engines hiss and the countryside awaits!
Steamrail Victoria, is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the restoration and operation of vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives and carriages. Operating all over the Victorian broad gauge network, the Steamrail runs regular day and occasional weekend tours to interesting and popular destinations.
Puffing Billy is the crowd favourite, hands down. Australia's century-old steam train is still running on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the scenic Dandenong Ranges.
There's always been a certain attachment to the Puffing Billy experience. The reason? Well, along with the Billy run you also get to interact with the fun-filled Thomas Show! Watch the cartoon spring to life as Sir Topham Hatt (AKA the Fat Controller) and Thomas the Tank Engine take charge and entertain you in the yard of Emerald Town Station.
If you're looking for a great family outing, then why not head out to the Bellarine Railway in Queenscliff? It features a Friends of Thomas weekend and is definitely worth a Sunday drive!
Maldon in Castlemaine and the Yarra Valley Railway also offer plenty of bang for your buck, so let off some steam this school holidays!

Steven Haby: I have always enjoyed travelling on Steamrail trips since I was a little boy and I am almost 40 now. One of our first trips was to Healesville and Lake Mountain. We picked the train up at Box Hill and our engine was K.153 with a set of 'V' swingdoor country carriages. Puffing Billy is fun too even in winter when the steam, smoke and sounds reverberate through the Dandenongs. Great work of CitySearch to place these ideas on their webpage. Diamond Valley Railway turns 50 this year - amazing to think how long this Melbourne institution has been around. I can also vouch for the Box Hill Miniature Railway as well. (02 July 2008)
Kasey J: I just booked on the Steam train to Geelong. Thomas the Tank Engine is Number 1 in our house! (02 July 2008)
