Bringing together work from the National Gallery of Victoria's permanent Asian collection, Moon in Reflection showcases world-renowned artist Kim Hoa Tram's unique spiritual artistic sensibility. The Melbourne-based Chinese artist's work is an exploration of the teachings and philosophies of Zen Buddhism, which the artist has immersed himself in for more than 10 years. His artwork is a reflection of his spirituality in Zen and his roots in Chinese arts and culture, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy.

This exhibition includes more than 30 paintings and calligraphies, which oversee the artist's journey towards spiritual enlightenment and artistic discovery. The works echo the clarity, simplicity, directness and humour of Zen. In his work, Kim explores the human condition of birth, old age, sickness and death, and the various themes in Zen philosophy: impermanence, delusion and meditation as a way to spiritual awakening.

One of Moon in Reflection's highlights is the two painting set, Delusion and Awakening. In these two artworks, the four-panelled paintings use a common bird motif to examine the Buddhist concept of spiritual awakening to the impermanence of life and inevitability of death.
