State Theatre - The Arts Centre

In the world of stage adaptations Matthew Bourne is elevating classics such as Swan Lake, Carmen and The Nutcracker to blockbuster status with his Tony-award-winning choreography and direction. For his latest production he recreates the 1990s teen cult flick Edward Scissorhands. Tim Burton's charmingly gothic story of a man-made boy condemned to a life with scissors for hands takes to the stage with the music of film score god Danny Elfman and arrangements by Terry Davies.

The music and movement of Bourne's Edward Scissorhands tells a heartstring tugging tale of the eccentric outsider originally played by Johnny Depp, as Edward wins his way into the bored hearts of suburban housewives with his unique hairdressing skills.

The set design of Lez Brotherson recreates your favourite scenes from Hope Springs' suburbia, from Edward's frantic hedge-trimming to spooky scenes in the mansion and graveyard.

Bourne's colourful and witty production of Edward Scissorhands has already enjoyed successful seasons in the UK and US and visits Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane in search of some more.

james: just saw it.Rubbish dancing.truly awfull (02 August 2008)

karen: Boring.Just got back from Melb, live in Sydney what a disappointment, except for 2 days in Melb. After 10mins I wanted to escape the theatre but was stuck in the middle of a row. I had to endure the whole first half, it was worse than watching paint dry. Each act was repetitious, I dont even think the music was great. and as for being a dance show, these dancers seemed cumbersome. I have seen better local high school productions and better dancers on so you think you can dance auditions. Sets were good.(Only thing) So bad i didnt return for second half , went back to my hotel and watched sex and the city on pay tv.now that was entertainment. (02 August 2008)

Donna: So the show isn't the emotional roller coaster the movie was but its def worth checking out nonetheless. The sets are fantastic & portaying the storyline in dance is overall successful. Whilst I agree that Edward is perhaps devoid of the heart tugging emotion Johnny Depp delivered especially in the first half he does redeem himself later on. And you gotta give him credit for dancing with huge those hands! See it. (28 July 2008)

Louise: Hey cut these guys some slack. I don't see you making a play about a wonderful movie also foromed into a wonderful play. yours sincerely - louise (14 July 2008)

Olivia: I would not rcommend this show to my friends in Melbourne. I saw it in Sydney and I was so confused what the director wanted to tell now. Edward was well accepted in this stage production by the villagers, and his opposition is so weak to make the story believable. Not Johnny Depp for sure and Kim is very ineffectively played. Not sensational dance, music is ordinary, story lost its sad charm. (03 June 2008)

Lucy Liam: I would agree with the review on The Australian - the stage version has lost the emotional impact and lost the story - no logic in this version of story any more. And that hear breaking romance has lost completely. Quote from the Australian: A bigger issue is that Edward (Matthew Malthouse at the opening performance) is too emotionally blank in the first half. His plight should move you intensely. That it doesn't means Edward Scissorhands leaves you recalling the grotesqueries of Hope Springs much more than sweet, bruised, cast-out Edward. There's a hole at its heart. (03 June 2008)
