Museum Victoria have unveiled The Melbourne Story, their newest and biggest permanent exhibition.
After three years spent piecing together 17 decades of Melbourne's history, the exhibition opened in the place previously occupied by the Australia Gallery at the Melbourne Museum, and houses such local treasures as a fully restored carriage from the Luna Park Big Dipper, a 19th century Cobb and Co stagecoach and a bark canoe from the Yarra River.
During the three-year renovation of the Australia Gallery its most eminent tenant was temporarily relocated to the Science and Life Gallery, but now Phar Lap returns to a brand new home featuring previously unseen memorabilia. The Melbourne Story will also include a re-creation of a 1800s cottage and interactive exhibitions that explore important moments in Melbourne's history.
The Melbourne Story is the largest exhibition ever put together by Museum Victoria, and has been produced through contributions from Melbourne's most experienced historians along with expert curators and conservation staff.
The exhibition is aimed at locals and visitors alike with more than 1,200 objects on show and stories ranging from the hardships of the first Melbournians setting up shop on 'Little Lon', to the debaucherous days of ACDC.
