A simple way to determine the right size pump for your pool.

A simple way to determine the model pump you need is to place 5 litres of water in a bucket. Time how long it takes you to tip it out at the height and rate you want the water to flow, eg: it takes 12 seconds to empty the 5 litre at a height of 1 metre. The flow rate per minute can be calculated by dividing 12 seconds into 60 seconds (equals 5) and multiplying the number of litres by that figure (5 x 5 = 25). Multiply this figure (250 by 1.2 to compensate for any frictional losses in the pipe work (eg: 1.2 x 25 = 30L/minute at the height of 1 metre). Use the chart below to select the most suitable pump. In our example the P450 would provide the optimum choice as it suppliers 34 L/minute at one metre.

Remember to keep any pipe work from your pump at the pump's outlet size and to avoid sharp bends when laying your pipe work to ensure any restriction to water flow is kept to a minimum.

Combined waterfall and fountain performance figures

The following table is a guide to assist in the selection of a pump when you have a fountain and waterfall. Assuming the fountain has a height of 500mm then the waterfall height would change dependent upon the size pump selected, eg:

A wide waterfall will require a greater flow rate, eg; 131/m would be required to give a thin continuous sheet of water 150mm wide.
