It's Russian for "any group of these persons acting together for a common purpose", so get on the blower and organise a threesome for drinks.
One of the surprising things about Troika is that, despite being one of the first kids on the block in the CBD's nascent hip-bar scene back in the mid-to-late '90s, it's hardly changed since it opened in 1998. Sure, there was a change in management in 2000, but you'd hardly notice it, perhaps because new laidback boss Paul Marshall believed in that old phrase: when you're on a good thing, stick with it.

Step inside and you'll find the same dimly lit interior of black and wood finishes with some striking red features, such as a carpeted section of wall, some comfy benches and another bit of wall graced with a barely recognisable collage of Marlboro and Coke signage. It's creative and stylish without trying too hard, and that's the kind of crowd that strolls into Troika. Your fellow drinkers are likely to be 20-or-30-somethings (maybe even 40-somethings) who prefer to live near the edge but not on it, like to hang out in an environment with attitude but isn't in your face, and enjoy a decent range of drinks that don't cost the earth. Rounding off the Troika package is music that's consistently interesting and fairly edgy (so, more out there than
Triple J).
